Sustainable mining is both complex and challenging to get right. Our approach has been to create a robust framework for integrating sustainability into our business strategy.

Our sustainable development framework

At Xstrata Copper, the principles of sustainable development are integral to our business model and guide our daily decision-making. We are committed to balancing economic, environmental and social considerations when managing our business to ensure the long-term viability of our operations and our host communities. 

We also follow GlencoreXstrata's Values and Code of Conduct, which are aligned with international standards including: the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) sustainability principles and guidelines; The UN Global Compact;the UN Declaration of Human Rights; the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights; and relevant ISO standards.

We take a systematic approach to setting targets, monitoring our performance and reporting, both internally and externally, against our sustainability framework, standards and targets.

Corporate governance and sustainability 

We follow the corporate governance standards set out in GlencoreXstrata's Values, Code of Conduct and GlencoreXstrata Corporate Practice. GlencoreXstrata’s Board establishes and reviews GlencoreXstrata Corporate Practice globally and its members receive regular reports on key performance indicators, critical and high-risk incidents and progress of the programme. Xstrata Copper’s SD Committee is comprised of:
