Our sustainable development framework
At Xstrata Copper, the principles of sustainable development are integral to our business model and guide our daily decision-making. We are committed to balancing economic, environmental and social considerations when managing our business to ensure the long-term viability of our operations and our host communities.
We also follow GlencoreXstrata's Values and Code of Conduct, which are aligned with international standards including: the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) sustainability principles and guidelines; The UN Global Compact;the UN Declaration of Human Rights; the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights; and relevant ISO standards.
We take a systematic approach to setting targets, monitoring our performance and reporting, both internally and externally, against our sustainability framework, standards and targets.
Corporate governance and sustainability
We follow the corporate governance standards set out in GlencoreXstrata's Values, Code of Conduct and GlencoreXstrata Corporate Practice. GlencoreXstrata’s Board establishes and reviews GlencoreXstrata Corporate Practice globally and its members receive regular reports on key performance indicators, critical and high-risk incidents and progress of the programme. Xstrata Copper’s SD Committee is comprised of:
Sustainable development assurance
- Chief Executive Officer
- Heads of Operating and Project Divisions
- General Counsel and Company Secretary
- General Manager Environment, Community and SD Performance
- General Manager Risk and Assurance
We participate in both internal and external assurance activities to ensure that we comply with our GlencoreXstrata Corporate Practice and that we are continuously improving our performance.
This process also ensures that we have SD targets in place for relevant issues, our monitoring systems are robust and our reporting is material, accurate and timely.
Xstrata Copper plays an active role in organisations that are copper-specific and others that are unique to geographical areas where we are the only Glencore Xstrata commodity business in operation. Our global public policy participation commitments include our involvement in the International Copper Association (ICA) and the Australia-Latin America Business Council (ALABC).
