Xstrata plc has made a donation of US$1 million to the Japanese Red Cross to support humanitarian relief efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Mick Davis, Xstrata plc Chief Executive Officer commented: “The scale of the devastation facing Japan is profoundly shocking and our heartfelt sympathies are with all those who have been directly or indirectly affected by the earthquake, tsunami and the destruction and loss of human life they have caused. Xstrata has many long-standing and valued relationships with Japanese customers and joint venture partners, particularly through our coal business. We are pleased to make a contribution from our central corporate social involvement funds towards the Japanese Red Cross efforts to bring relief to the millions of people who have been impacted by this disaster.”
